Summary

[General description] A horse and cart stands in front of the grand Savings Bank building with its neo-classical facade and tall columns. This impressive bank building was designed and its construction supervised by architect Edward Davies (of the firm Cumming and Davies) and opened for buisiness on 28th April, 1904. [On back of photograph] 'Acres 139 and 140 / Currie Street, south side / 1927 / Near side of Savings Bank building is 24.5 yards east of Peel Street. Frontage of bank: 24 yards / Reproduced in "Chronicle", Dec. 10, 1927.' The sculpture atop the building was done by William James Maxwell, the preferred carver of architect Edward Davies.
